  1. I love all four choices, and think the non-fiction LOCOMOTIVE was bit a mild surprise but acknowledgement for a great artist who was previously ignored by past Caldecott committees. But I continue to mourn the unconscionable absence of MR. TIGER GOES WILD, and also feel that books like A SPLASH OF RED, STARDINES ACROSS THE SKY, THE MATCHBOX DIARY, NINO WRESTLES THE WORLD, THE MIGHTY LALOUCHE, INSIDE OUTSIDE, UNICORN THINKS HE’S PRETTY GREAT, BLUEBIRD and PARROTS OVER PUERTO RICO for collectively being left out in an especially picture-book-rich year that yield only THREE (3) Honor Books. I have made my own feelings known at Horn Book, but what I basically get back are comments like “the system works” and was arrived at after mass scrutiny by a 15 person committee. I respect all the work that goes into this and applaud those who took their task with vows of dedication, but like any others awards group it is subject to personal taste.
