Dead Girls Don’t Write Letters by Gail Giles (0-7613-1727-9)
I loved Giles’ first book Shattered Glass, so I was looking forward to reading this new one. It was definitely worth the wait!
Sunny’s older sister Jazz was killed in a fire and the family falls apart. Sunny steps in to take care of her parents, finally feeling that she has a real role in her family, since she is no longer in her sister’s shadow. But then she gets a letter from her dead sister. A girl arrives at the house claiming to be Jazz, she looks like Jazz, acts like Jazz and seems to be Jazz in every way. But is she Jazz?
This book is a quick read. The story is immediately gripping and will catch readers up and carry them along. I had great fun trying to unravel the mystery and was left reeling by the twisting ending. I would recommend this to most readers, even reluctant ones, especially girls. The story perfectly captures sibling rivalry and family grief. Definitely one not to miss!

  1. I read this book in June and when i started to read it i was totally hooked. I absolutely loved it. But then i got to the last page and i was completely lost. I need help! i don’t understand the ending at all. Can someone please email me back and explain the ending to me?

  6. I really liked this book. I read it in about two hours which means I’ve going to have to read it again in a little bit. What’s so wonderful about the book is that you really wonder what happened and what didn’t happen. The things that Sunny made up and the things she didn’t know she was doing. I can’t say I really understand the last letter. I think it has this meaning around the whole imposter idea. That she has such a psycological problem that she can create people and ideas. And that the next person visting is her.

  8. This book was a great read. I’m very very impressed. I’ll have to pick up Gile’s First book sometime. Well the ending is somewhat confusing. But I have to agree with blaise when I say I can’t fully understand it. Of course i have my speculations. I believe that the Not-Jazz girl has picked up Sunny’s personality just like she did Jazz’s. And Not-Jazz did this because of the end of the book when Sunny could have called the po po or w/e but didn’t and just let her leave. It was a thrilling read, i recomend this to everyone! =

  11. PLEASE EXPLAIN THE ENDING TO ME.
    is not-jazz real, or did sunny make her up? if so, why did she make her up? was it so she could get the love she needed? did sunny really write the journal and the letter? why did she? and why did she write a letter to herself at the end? AHHH PLEASE EXPLAIN THE ENDING, THE POINT!!!

    the ending is very confusing! i’ve asked about 10 of my friends who also read the book and the don’t understand it either.

  15. The ending either can be that Sunny imagined the entire thing or it was all real. Most likely imaginary because Sunny gets a letter from her DEAD sister and doesn’t open it. Plus she is an excellent forgerer. And her parents let this stranger stay in their house even though they knew it wasn’t Jazz. Plus her parents say none of this happened when Sunny went to therapy. Basically saying Sunny has problems and imagined the whole thing.

  21. Hello I read dead girls don’t write letters. I think that, the end, Sunny cread all that history in her mind about her dead sister. Jazz never existed. In my own opinion Sunny created all that because she had a terrible family and she did not good relation in the school. bisides, Giles wrote the novel infuenced by Lord of the flies( I read that book too) the main idea of that book is, some people creat bad thing in her/his main and this have a terrible consecuences. I am a student of moder language in Venezuela, I read that book in my prefer subject, Reading and writing ENglish 1.
