Runny Babbit

Runny Babbit is a new book from my favorite children’s poet, Shel Silverstein. The entire concept is an exchange of letters from one word in a line to another. I know that if I had just sat down and read this myself, I would have tired of the concept quickly. But luckily, I have a poetry-loving eight year old to share books with. We shared this one over the course of several bedtimes, decoding the real meaning of the poems after happily reading the mixed-up versions aloud.
So our final verdict? A perfectly billy sook perfect to kare with shids who whether they pove loetry or not.

  1. I was a little startled by you calling it a new books, since I was pretty sure he’s dead… šŸ™‚

  2. You’re right he is dead, but it is a book of previously unpublished poetry. So it is new to his readers. But I should have made it more clear that he had died.

  3. I also have an 8 year old who read this book from cover to cover in one sitting. She absolutely LOVES it. Yes, it is silly but for her the figuring out as to what it is really saying is a wonderful, delightful challenge.

  4. I know that Shel has published about ten books, including his new one, Runny Babbit, He won a Grammy Award for Best Children’s Author, for his book Where The Sidewalk Ends. He died on May 10, 1999 in Key West, Florida, and he died of a heartattack. I’ve learned lots more about Shel also. He was a great poet.

  7. My daughter ‘discovered’ Shel from an old, old book of mine, (poem called The Slithergadee) and recently heard Johnny Cash singing ‘Boy Named Sue’ Which was written by Shel.
We now have Where the Sidewalk Ends, and Light in the Attic.
Gotta get her into Ogden Nash soon!
