Releasing in mid-September, Inkspell by Cornelia Funke is the the sequel to the well-received Inkheart. The sequel continues the story of Dustfinger, Farid, Meggie, Mo and Resa. Dustfinger has discovered another reader, Orpheus, who can not only read characters out of books, but can return them into books by rearranging words from that book. After Dustfinger is read back into Inkheart, Farid is desperate to follow him and warn him that Basta, the villain, is after him. So Farid goes to Meggie to try to get her to read him into Inkheart too. But Meggie does more than that and reads herself into Inkheart with Farid. Soon afterwards, Mortola and Basta force Meggie’s father Mo to enter the story of Inkheart as well.
Once into Inkheart, the reader and the characters begin to see the magic of Inkheart with their own eyes. This is perhaps the most charming part of the book, as we are allowed to see the tiny fairies and complex society of Inkheart. Funke’s prose is weighty and heavy as it was in Inkheart. She has a unique style of writing that can take some getting used to. But this writing is exactly what creates the world of Inkheart with such vibrancy. Inkspell is a masterpiece of setting, with an imaginary world so well-rendered that it makes the real one pale. We are introduced to a new group of fascinating characters in this book, each complex and distinct.
Recommend this to good readers who will be able to see their own love of books reflected back to them, and see themselves as people who would like someday to enter their favorite books too. I enjoyed Inkheart, but would say that this novel is even better. It is more vibrant and evocative. There are many great quotes about reading in the book, but my favorite comes early:
“Isn’t it odd how much fatter a book gets when you’ve read it several times?…As if something were left between the pages every time you read it. Feelings, thoughts, sounds, smells…and then when you look at the book again many years later, you find yourself there too, a slightly younger self, slightly different, as if the book had preserved you, like a pressed flower… both strange and familiar.”
A sigh-worthy quote that will hopefully get you to try this series.

  1. I have read Inkheart!!! It was an amazing book! I think Basta is really HOTT! I don’t agree with everything he does- he’s kinda evil, but he is extremly cute when he is scared and it is so funny to tease him about his superstitions. I am really looking foward to Inkspell which is released in 2 days time!

  5. For one thing, Meggie probably falls for Farid for a reason, and for another, Dustfinger is a happily married adult who is deeply in love with his wife and children.
    As for the book, Inkspell is an ingenious novel with a breathtaking plot, inspirational quotes, and heartbreaking emotion.
    A great read, for any reader interested in Fantasy, Cornelia Funke is one of the best. Recommended that you should read the prequal, Inkheart first before you move onto this, for I trust it’ll be hard to tackle head first without background history.

  6. i totally agree about dustfinger!! HOT!! basta is a **** head!! but i do agree with katherine jones… he is a fill grown man and has a wife… STILL! whats not to love?!?! AND i think miss author should write a sequal!! (SPELLING MEANS NOTHING TO ME!!)

  11. I was absolutely in love with the first book the moment I picked it up. When I saw that there was a second one I nearly had a heart attach. Inkspell was so good and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I didn’t set it down. I read it in three long seatings. I can’t wait for the next one to come out. Inkspell was better (in my option) than Inkheart. There was so much felling in it. I loved it. The characters are brought to life to such an extent that I’m afraid they might walk off the page. I love this book and highly advise it! It is amazing like all of Cornelia Funke’s books. It’s a must-read.
    My option on the characters is –
    Farid – Heartbreaking in the second book
    Meggie – Oh my gosh!! How much I would give to be her!
    Dustfinger – So cool and awesome!
    Mo – Very sweet
    Resa – Nice
    Basta – Not very nice. lol
    Roxane – I didn’t really like Roxane. She really didn’t seem like a very nice person to be around
    Violante – She seemed very unhappy. So sad
    Orpheus – Cheeseface, haha funny character
    Rosenquartz – Funny
    Fenoglio – He seemed to always be cranky
    Mortola – Bad, bad lady
    Elinor – I wish I had as many books as she did

    I think it’s really interesting that we are falling head over heals for characters in a book. There not real no matter how much we imagine. Funny.

  15. I love Inkheart and Inkspell SOOOOOO much! Dustfinger is so cool, and I want to be a bookbinder like Mo when I grow up. Farid is so sweet, and I wish the boys at my school were more like him. I hope Dustfingers comes back to life in the third book, HE JUST HAS TO!

  18. I heard that the second book was actually called inkblood in Germany but was changed to inkspell later when it came here
    also I heard the third book could be called inkdawn
    I don’t like the name that much but it must have some type of meaning in the book
    The second book was really sad and i liked it better than the first book

  20. I think that the 3rd book should really come out sooner than autumn 2008. that is ages away and those books are like sugar. ADDICTIVE!!! i wont even let my family touch the book coz iv always got it in my hand. i can say just one thing: Farid and Dustfinger had better be hot in the movie!

Dustfinger love him no one will ever change my mind… but in the movie the actor looks so freaky… god i wish he would come to life *sigh* i wanna be in that book lol

  27. farid andd meggie are just young an in love so don’t rip on them. they don’t know any better. and dustfinger is married and has kids and everything but that does not mean us girls can’t think he’s hot and want to marry him. farid is also NOT stupid for being with meggie and vice versa. THEY’RE YOUNG! cut them some slack!

  31. Inkheart and inkspell are both very moving books i absolutly love them. I hope theres a third book because id love to read it. Every word in the book seems to be in the exact place it should be as if a spider has perfectly woven them onto the page. I wish i could have as many books as Elinor had and be able to play with fire like Dustfinger, I think a movie should be made of it i’d love to see the black prince & his bear and Elinors house of books and the strolling players & Roxanes beauty & the tamed fire by dustfinger & farid.

  34. I’ve done some research & it turns out theres is going to be a movie and it should be released next yr in spring i can’t wait to see it. Also the 3rd book is said to be 700 pages long that just might be the draft though it could be shorter. Anyway i hope they get Dustfinger back it wouldn’t be a right without him.

  38. Umm you people really need to utilize the internet to its full extent. there is a third book and its called inkdeath. But if you were paying attention to the book mo made for the addler and the three words to be written on it then you would have cleverly figured that out without needing the internet. The characters in this book are so in-depth and life like can’t you come up with something more to say about them other than them being hot?

  41. I absolutly loved Inkheart and Inkspell. They really were the best books ive ever read. I just cant wait untill the third book comes out. Cornelia is an awsome author. And i think its so cool how Resas real name is my name and so moe all my friends that have read the book call me Resa.
    p.s. my fave character was Dustginger and i cried when he died at the end of InkSpell.

  42. Inkheart and Inkspell are some of the best books that I have ever read! I agree that Dustfinger and Farid are probably both hot!!! But there is also alot more to the book then their hottness. As soon as the third book comes out Im running to whereever I can find it and I dont care about the price! I thought the second book was alot better than the first. And my favorite part was when Dustfinger gave up his life for Farid! If he doesnt come back in the third book Im gonna be sooooooo sad! I think Roxanne was a butt-head to Farid at the end of Inkspell and I will probably dislike her forever for that. Meggie definatly made the rite choice with Farid! But if I was meggie I probably would have almost slapped Farid more then once…
    Here is what I think about the caracters:
    Meggie: Awesome, Brave, just a little too forgiving.
    Mo (The Blue Jay): One of the best caracters in the book!
    Resa: Very nice (Im so glad she got her voice back!)
    Elinor:Kinda stubborn but really cool.
    Darius: Kinda a couard.
    Dustfinger: Awesome and very gifted.
    Farid: Cute and very nice, sometimes a little inconsiteret, a very good apprentice.
    Fenoglio: Nice ,kinda weird.
    Orpheus (ritefully named Cheese Face): Annoying.
    Roxanne: Kinda mean… But nice to Dustfinger.
    Adderhead: A full blone Butthead!
    Basta: *** hole.
    Magpie: same as Basta…
    When the movie come out I will be soooo happy! But really I cant wait 08 for it it will drive me crazy!

  43. i totally agree my favorite sceens are when meggie and farid are in the rain together and i will be sooooo thrilled when the third book and the movie come out but i really agree that the 2nd book is much better than the first farid is such a hottie but i think he is too keen on having meggie stay with him and marry him in the ink world but i would kill to be meggie when i first read inkheart i tryed to read like that but to no prevail oh well lol but the auther totally has a knack for fairy tales and needs to come up with more and purswade the movie makers to make the movies even though their german!! lol

    Inkdeath (German title Tintentod) is the third book in the Inkheart trilogy. No plot details have been given by author Cornelia Funke, but it will resume only a few weeks after where Inkspell left off: Farid and Meggie’s mission of bringing Dustfinger, who died at the end of Inkspell, back to life. Cornelia Funke has confirmed that Dustfinger will come back in Inkdeath. In speaking with the help of Fenglio, the author and weaver of the inkworld. It is expected to be the last novel about the Inkworld. This book is supposed to be the best book in the trilogy so far.

Cuz if the Adderhead stays immortal it will be a total disaster. And at the end of the book,when Dustfinger summoned the White Women and died so that Farid could stay alive,I cried my eyes out.I hope you all know this,or have you just been focusing on how hot you think all the characters are?   59. OMG I love this book SO FREEKIN’ much the second book made me cry, laugh, scream, and even feel pain. i fell in love with this book the mintute i finished Chap. 30-Cosimo. I felt so jealous of Meggie and i would gaive anything and EVERYTHING to be her for like, ever. She is my IDOL. and i am in LOVE with Farid till the end.

  65. I read both of the books in 5 days. I just could not put them down. I envy Meggie because she has Farid and he is my type of guy. Dustfinger is my type to but farid is so much cooler and hotter. I saw the characters for the inkheart movie and the guy who plays farid is so hott. Dustfinger is kinda.. well…ugly in my eyes. They chose a perfect person to play meggie. Her name is Eliza Bennett from Nanny McPhee. I can’t wait for Inkdeath to come out. I am rereading the first to books again. I love Farid!

I think Farid grew up alot between the two books.   72. Inkspell is my favourite book of all time. Definately. My favourite characters have to be Mo, Dustfinger, and the Black Prince. I hated how no one liked Mo or the Prince… They’re really great characters, in my opinion. Dustfinger’s also pretty cool, but I’m not crazy over him. I can’t wait for Inkdeath! I also love the Bluejay! Sorry, I’m going a little crazy…

I think that dustfinger is a freakin hottie (not in the movie just in the book) and farid is too (movie and book) and I am a mix of maggie and brianna, so i like them!!
