Gomez Is Beezus?!

Brace yourself.  The film version of the book Beezus and Ramona, which will be titled Ramona and Beezus, will star Selena Gomez as Beezus.  She’s the lead in Disney’s The Wizards of Waverly Place. They are obviously cashing in on her rising star status.

The 17-year-old Gomez will be playing a character who is supposed to be ten in the book.  And the actress playing Ramona, who is 4 in the book, is 10 years old.

This makes no sense to me.  Surely there was a more appropriate vehicle for her?  Though of course her squeaky-clean Disney image should be clung to as long as possible.  My, I’m snarky today!  But really, don’t mess with Ramona!

Anyone else mortified at this?  Cinematical certainly is!

  1. This is almost as ridiculous as Ben Barnes playing Prince Caspian and kissing Susan in the second Narnia movie!

Disney markets these kids as much as possible and, unfortunately, it is the accuracy of the book that suffers. Gomez looks every bit a woman. I have no idea how they are going to try to turn her into a prepubescent child.

The Ramona books are so famous and so widely read. For those young readers, it is a shame Disney couldn’t stay true to the young, innocent construct of Cleary’s novel.

  2. I am horrified! Okay, I have never watched more of that show than the time it took me to change into my gym clothes (why do they show Nickelodeon in the women’s locker room? No idea.) Anyway, she just seems way too teeny-boppery to be Beezus. Beezus is supposed to be uncool! I hope they undo her strategically snipped hairdo.

  3. What??!! Kids today already act/look/sound older than their counterparts fifty years ago – why on earth emphasize the difference by casting kids who are waaaaayyyy too old? I’ll bet Ramona is going to come off as extremely bratty and immature b/c of the casting.

  4. Personally, I think Selena Gomez looks 10 so it works for me. But still, I don’t like the fact that they cast a Disney star. I am so over the Disney star factor.

  5. You know, I’m going to go against the grain, and say this sounds like a good thing to me. A movie is a whole different animal than a book, so I think putting a young actress who’s getting some buzz in the role is a good thing. I think a story with a 10-year old protagonist (Ramona) is a lot easier sell and will probably be more popular than one with a 4-year old protagonist.

True to the book? No. Entertaining to watch? Probably yes.

  6. Have you ever considered adding more videos to your blog posts to keep the readers more entertained? I mean I just read through the entire article of yours and it was quite good but since I’m more of a visual learner.
