2012 Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards

The 2012 Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards for Excellence in Children’s Literature were announced at BookExpo America.  There are winners in three categories as well as honor books for each.  Here are the winners:

Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Awards

The Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Awards are given annually to two children’s books: one in the young adult/middle reader category and the other in the picture book category.  The award winner is chosen by two different groups of children and teens.

Children’s Books Ireland Winners

The CBI Book of the Year for 2012 has been announced

The winner of the CBI Book of the Year is also the winner of the Children’s Choice Award, the first time the same book has won both awards!

The winner is:

The Eilis Dillon Award is awarded to a first time author or illustrator.  The winner is:

The Butterfly Heart by Paula Leyden

 

Three additional awards were given this year:

  

The Judges Special Award went to My Dad Is 10 Years Old by Mark O’Sullivan

The Honour Award for Illustration went to Stuck by Oliver Jeffers

The Honour Award for Fiction went to Maitríóisce by Siobhan Parkinson

 

There is also a 2012 shortlist that features the best of Irish writing and illustration for young people.  It includes the titles above and the following four:

2011 Andre Norton Award Winner

The 2011 Nebula Winners have been announced.  As always, teens will enjoy many of the science fiction and fantasy winners for adults, but happily there is also a category just for young adult books: The Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy.

2012 California Young Reader Medal

The California Young Reader Medal winners have been announced for the 2011-2012 year.   Books considered for the award are nominated by children, teens, teachers, librarians, parents and others who work with young people.  Nominees must have a strong appeal for the age group, be often read or requested by children or teens, must have been published in the last four years and still be in print, must be written by a living author, and must be a work of fiction available in English.  The winners are selected in specific age categories.

Children’s Choice Book Awards

May 3rd is the deadline for children to vote in the 2012 Children’s Choice Book Awards.  There are thirty finalists in six categories.  Last year over half a million children participated, and this year it is expected to reach over 1 million participants.  The winners will be announced as part of Children’s Book Week.  The mix of books is intriguing with many books that you will not see on other award nominee lists.

Ezra Jack Keats New Writer and New Illustrator Awards

The winners of the 26th Annual Ezra Jack Keats New Writer and New Illustrator Awards have been announced.  The awards celebrate authors and illustrators who "impart Ezra Jack Keats’ values—the universal qualities of childhood, a strong and supportive family, and the multicultural nature of our world.”  The awards are given by The Ezra Jack Keats Foundation in partnership with the de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection at The University of Southern Mississippi Libraries.
