39 Clues

Looks like 39 Clues is going to be a huge series from Scholastic.  Over and over again at the ALA exhibits, I saw disappointed children walking away without a copy of the book.  But hey, they did get a really cool 39 Clues backpack!

Dreamworks has now acquired the movie rights for the series.  And stunningly, Steven Spielberg is looking to direct!  Whoa!

The series launches in September using multiple platforms including 10 books, collectible cards, and an online game.  Each book will be written by a different author, as I blogged here in December.

Dragon Movies Coming

There are two children’s books series all about dragons heading for the big screen.  Dreamworks will be releasing How to Train Your Dragon in 2009 and Universal has just purchased the rights to Dragonology.

Twilight's First Scene

Take a look at the first completed scene of MTV’s film version of Twilight by Stephanie Meyer.  Let’s hope the rest of the film looks this good.

You can also check out the official website for the movie that features a preview, video gallery, images, and much more.

The movie will be released December 12, 2008.

Any comments on the yummy cast?  Personally, I love Kristen Stewart as Bella.

Twilight the Movie

MTV has an interview with Ashley Greene, star of the film version of Stephanie Meyer’s popular vampire books.  She tells of her own love of the novels, and talks about fan concerns about her height and the length of her hair.

Stephanie Meyer has a whole page on her website dedicated to the movie.  You’ll find more pictures of the cast there.

Harry Potter Movie #8

The Los Angeles Times reported yesterday that the final Harry Potter book will be made into two films.  The first half is due to be released in November 2010 and the second part in May 2011.

I think this is a great decision and have long wondered why they haven’t done this with other Harry Potter books.  They seem so very condensed in film form and a lot of the extra moments that make Harry Potter so popular are necessarily trimmed.

Stephanie Meyer's Big Year

Little, Brown Books announced today that Breaking Dawn, the fourth and final book in Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga will be released on Saturday, August 2nd at midnight.

Meyer’s first adult novel The Host will be released on May 6th.

And to complete the year, Twilight will be made into a movie and released December 12th.

A huge year for Meyer and her fans!  To keep informed on all of the developments, check out Meyer’s website

New Golden Compass Trailer

Check out this breathtaking new trailer for The Golden Compass film.  Wow!

Nick & Norah's Movie

Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist is becoming a film by Mandate Films.  Kat Dennings will play Norah and Michael Cera will play Nick.  Looks like the targeted release date is 2009.

The Seeker

NPR has a piece on the upcoming The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising, a film adaptation of the series by Susan Cooper which has me twitchy in all the wrong ways.  Yes, the film itself looks nice, but will it bear any resemblance to my beloved series?  I doubt it.  And this article did nothing to make me fear it less.  Take this quote from Cooper:

“You do have to do violence to a book to make it into a screenplay —
the two mediums are so different,” Cooper says. “But the alteration is
so enormous in this case. It is just different.”

That’s exactly what I am afraid of!  Was the violence done to this series surgical and limited, or was it like a bomb going off.  We will just have to wait and see.
