  3. Dear Louis,
I was wondering if the topics you write about are related to your childhood? This is for a school report where we had to choose our favorite author and write a feature article. So I was wondering whether or not I could have some information about you and the ways you write your books.

  4. Dear Mr. Sachar- I am a graduate student in Portland, OR, and I am currently taking a Children’s Lit class. By sheer luck, I randomly choose your name as the author I am to do a presentation on. I have been researching your life and work for about a month and a half, but it seems as though every webpage about you has the exact same repetitive info(not that it isn’t very interesting!) I was wondering if you could contact me as soon as you get a chance (but before my project is due, which is soon)and tell me something absolutely fantastic about yourself to share with my class. Thank you very much for your time- With sincere best wishes, Angela

I am writing on behalf of the San Marcos Student Reading Council in San Marcos, TX. It is a club made up of pre-service teachers from Texas State University to help foster literacy in the community. I was looking for children’s authors that live in Austin, and I found your website. I loved “Sideways Stories…” when I was a kid! Would you be willing to visit a school or public library?

  9. Mr. Sachar – congratulations! Your Wayside School series has officially competed with video games and cartoons for our son Anton’s rapt attention…and won! These are the first books that our 9-year-old Anton has absolutely LOVED reading.
They are so quirky, funny and have so many timeless truths and lovably strange characters. Anton is now an official bookworm. I appreciate that before kids will read books that are “good for them” they must first simply enjoy reading as sheer entertainment. We all look forward to your next book Small Steps.
    Warmest Regards, Jane Burek

  15. Dear Mr. Sachar,
Ever since I was a kid (well, I’m sixteen now, but you know what I mean) your books have been a favorite of mine. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom!. Countless. In fact, it happens to be 2AM (my first day of Christmas break) and I just happened to finish reading it again. Second favorite would have to be the Wayside School series, which I’ve also read many times since I was young. Of course, I’ve also read Holes, and find it amazing the movie adaption was actually pretty good. I find it very interesting you liked Kurt Vonnegut and J.D. Salinger when you were in school. Did you ever think about majoring in English? I don’t have a lot of time for recreational reading, but when I do I’ve read several books by Salinger (Catcher in the Rye, Franny and Zooey), and after rereading There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom for the first time in recent years, and finding the Salinger reference in it, I know what book I have to read next!
I decided I wanted to contact you, but couldn’t find an address or e-mail to send you a letter, so here I am. I’d appreciate a response but I suppose it isn’t necessary. Though I’m certain you can’t write without inspiration, a sequel to There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom would be…awesome (couldn’t think of a better word).
Best of luck with your writing, and hopefully your books will reach more kids like me who will read them well into their adult years.
    Sincerely,
    ~Phillip

I am doing a project on you. I got to pick my favorite author and read books by them and do book reports on them. I chose you of course and at the end, I will get to dress up like you. You are an inspiration and I enjoy reading all of your books. I have read all of them in one day and I stay up until about 12-o-clock reading them. They always give me a laugh. I wanted to email you and present your reply to my class. My favorite books by you were the Wayside school series. I have read Holes, Small Steps, There is a boy in the girls bathroom, The boy who lost his face, the wayside school series, and I am planing on reading all of your books. I love to write, only during class, not on my own.
I am not much of a reader, but when I get a hold of one of your books, I become a bookworm. I have read the Wayside school series 3 time each. I always wondered what the life of an other is like. Can you tell me?
    Inspirationly Yours,

I am wondering if you are going to write another book like them? They could maybe be about the life of another person after they have left camp green lake. For example for small steps armpit is the main character, you could use someone else like Zig Zag, Stanley or Zero. I have a few more questions:
§ Are you writing another book like holes or small steps?
§ Have you already written another book like small steps or holes
Thankyou for reading my questions and comments. I hope you can get back to me as soon as you can.

  39. Dear Louis Sachar,
Your book Marvin Redpost: Is He a Girl? Made me wonder what if I changed into a boy tomorrow? Would I change my behavior, clothes, sports and education? If that did happen to me, I would have time to experience “boy culture” for a few weeks. It would be awesome if that happened. I’ve seen some people who are transvestites and wondered why people do that (but the important things is that I show them respect). I don’t want to be transvestite but it would be interesting to act like a boy for few weeks.
While I was reading this book, I started to wonder: if I am a boy, what will my life look like? Would I still hang out with girls instead of boys? If I changed from a girl to a boy when I was seven years old and then didn’t changed back to a female until I was twenty-seven years old, would I happy to be a female again? If I were a boy but in my heart acted like a girl, would I have feelings for boys or girls? Would you be happy to be a transvestite?
In my mind, I would rather be a boy instead of a girl because boys are more active. So many girls are just interested in shopping, boyfriends, boys, sports and some education (if they are good at it). Boys are interested in sports, educations, girlfriends, fight, joining gangs, stealing cars, drinking alcohol and using drugs. But if I were a boy, I wouldn’t do some of the same things that boys tend to do. I would focus on education, hang out with good friends that do not use drugs and drink alcohol, and do some positive things. When I was a younger girl, I used to like boys athletic clothes. After school I would go to sports practices and not like to change out of sports clothes. In the present sometimes I use t-shirt when I feel like it rather than using nice girl clothes.
    Sincerely,
    Jillian Apfel, Grade 9th

I’m Narineh, im 13 years old and I go to St. Mary’s school. We had to choose a Newberry award winning book for a book report and I chose “HOLES”. After I saw the movie I knew the book would be just as good. that is why I chose this book. I love to read and I have read a lot of books so far in my life, but “HOLES” is my favorite book by far. J Your book really impressed me and I think that it was even better then the movie. Although “HOLES” is my favorite book written by you, I have read most of you other popular books.
“Small steps” is another one of my favorites. Also, when I was younger I would read a lot of your “wayside school” series. I really enjoyed them.
My favorite part of your book holes was when hes in the pit with the deadly lizards ( toward the end of your book). I liked you book “HOLES” because it kept me on my toes and was never boring. I didn’t even want to put the book down! They way you wrote your book inspired me and made me want to read it again. My favorite part of “small steps” was the beginning because you get you know about what happened right after “HOLES”. You are my favorite author and I hope you come out with more amazingly written books. Thank you for making my reading experience fun!

My names is Liuba {pronounced like Tuba with an L} and I am 13 years old.
I have a question, and if you can, please answer it. I need you to answer it for me to get an A in English.
My teacher, my class (myself included) believe that every character in the Sideways Stories from Wayside School (as well as your other books) have a purpose. But what of Miss Zarves on the 19th story? I think that if she doesn’t exist, it means she doesn’t have a purpose, and my teacher said that it was, I quote “Brilliant thinking!”, but he still wants proof – that I am right. This is why I am asking you to please correct me if I am wrong:
Miss Zarves on the 19th story does not serve a real purpose in the book Sideways Stories from Wayside School.
Oh, and by the by, your books are AMAZING.

I know that you gave some hint that is related with results which is really awesome. I was getting eager to know who made this amazing book. That’s why I found the web-side and I am writing letter to you. Most of all, I am so honor to make contact with you by e-mail. And if you don’t mind, I would like to ask some questions that I really want to know.
First of all, do you have any special purpose to write “Hole”? I have thought some scene are from your own experience so I wonder that.
Secondly, who do you like most in the “Hole”? There are many diverse characters, so who have your special care?
Thirdly, if I said I read “Hole” again more carefully and intensively, which part would you recommend? As I read, I have thought I miss something important.
Lastly, I wonder what you are planing to. What kind of genre will you write and when I can have opportunity to share it.
“Hole” make me have a chance to have interest about English novel and is my favorite book that I read recently. So I am really excited about you and your book.
Thank you for reading my letter and I am looking forward to expect a response to this letter.

  50. Hi there, Louis.
I’m Ashley. I’m an Aspiring author, but I didnt come for advice on writing, I have been on every site on gods green earth and have now accepted that I’m going to have to figure it out by myself.
I am a huge Holes fan, I particularly like the characters Zigzag and Magnet. They appear the most real to me.
Especially with Zigzag having acute paranoia. I like that magnet got somewhat addicted to stealing (what with $5000 of stolen property under his belt) and I get a great feel for the book.
Which suprised me, seeing as my usual genre is high fantasy and science fiction. But I am hooked.
My question is, are you going to write more stories from D-tents point of view, like Small Steps? Like a D-Tent Diaries series?
I would worship you if you did. Truly. Forever. They are erecting your huge gold shrine as we speak. Please, please, please, please!
Many happy returns and minimal writers block,
