Ban Dahl Because of Language!

Daily News Transcript – Local News Coverage
Has anyone else noticed the large number of book challenges being reported in the news lately? First it was the new batch of books for children that celebrate families with homosexual parents. Next it was books on the occult. And here comes banning books with the words “ass” and “idiot” in them! Yes, those are the two words that a parent believes are worthy of banning a book from fourth graders!

  1. People have just gone stark raving crazy lately. I believe people have a perfect right to question whatever they want–part of living in a free society, and librarians should be able to back up their choices with eloquent, persuasive statements. Historically, there are some people who have always had odd (in my opinion) ideas about what other people’s children shouldn’t read, but lately, people have gone off the deep end. In the last year, we’ve had a complaint about Hawthorne’s TWICE TOLD TALES as illustrated by Arthur Rackham. The complaint? That the illustrations were pornography. We retained the book, and the illustrations, of course, but it was so silly, it was very hard to reason with the complainant. Several years ago I had a mom object to Helen Oxenbury’s board book JUST SHOPPING WITH MOM, also because it was “pornographic.” The illustration that was allegedly porn was a cartoon mom in a bra and half-slip in a dressing room with her baby in a stroller.
