  1. Dear Miss Kate DiCamillo
I am reading one of your book-BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE now, As a foreigner, I found this book is helpfull to improve my English reading capability.
But during my reading of this book, I found that there was a sentence I could not understand completely-p96″Yes ma’am. I am. But these days, I don’t drink nothing stronger than coffee”. could you please explain it for me? Is there some mistakes in this sentence?

Like Deana MacNaughton, I am a grade 4 teacher (in Victoria, BC), and my students are doing a novel study on ‘Because of Winn-Dixie’. As a bonus activity I would like them to be able to write a letter/e-mail to the author. I have been unable to find contact information over the internet. Is there somewhere my students can write you?
    Thanks

  21. Dear Mrs. DiCamillo,
Hi, my name is LeNay Graham and I am a 5/6 grade teacher at Ozaukee Christian School in Saukville, Wisconsin. In the last couple years, I have become a big fan of your books, especially “The Tale of Despereaux” and “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.” The reason that I love these books so much is that they are not only beautifully written but they teach themes that I think are so important for kids to grasp: forgiveness, redemption, love, and hope.
I know that this may be a long shot, but I was wondering if you or your publisher would be interested in donating 21 copies of both books or of one of the books. I would love to use “The Tale of Despereaux” in November for a novel study; I would like to use “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” in the spring. I have my own copy but would like the kids to be able to have their own so that they can participate in literature circles and have discussion about these themes.
Like I said, I realize that you probably get many e-mails like this, and I completely understand if this is a crazy request. 🙂 Thank you so much for reading this and for considering our request.
    Blessings to you.
    Sincerely,
Mrs. LeNay Graham (and her 5/6 grade class)

  24. Dear Ms. DiCamillo, My 9-year-old’s grandmother is not feeling well and lives out of state, so I thought I’d have her read The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane to grandma via tape recorder.
Well, she read chapters 1-5 and I packed up the tape along with the book for grandma. Before sending it, though, I thought: “Humm… I wonder what happens to the china rabbit?” So, I sat down and read the entire book in one sitting!”
The ending was entirely poignant and satisfying. In fact, the tears rolled down my face! Great character and plot development. The rabbit truly underwent a transformation, as did this reader.
Thank you for writing such an affecting book. Keep up the good work!

I was so happily surprised to see our picture from nursery school posted in your journal. Ever since I read your book about Winn Dixie and made the connection to our experience in nursery school, I have been trying to contact you. My mother also tried to get in touch with you. We have a lot to catch up about. Remember our family adopted your minature schauzer Lizzie and she was a great family member to us for many years. I remember that when you moved to Florida that you took your Standard Poodle with you (I forget the name). At any rate, I’d love to catch up with you. I was stunned to see the same picture that I have and cherish on your website. I guess two little girls have the capacity to bond together and go through hard times that they’ll remember for life.
Please contact me at cjstemmler@aol.com as soon as you can. It’s been over 30 years that we’ve talked to each other and I’ve thought about you every year we’ve been apart.
I’d love to hear from you Katie.

I am a hungarian girl, but I went to the American school for the past 8 years. I read all your books, but my favorite one is the Tale Of Desperaux. I read it about 4 times, and I always want to read it again. I absoltuley love your word choice, and you are so descriptive, that it is a pleasure to read your books. I know a whole bunch of people say the same thing, but I really want to meet you, because you inspire me, and you are one of my heroes.

  29. Dear Ms. DiCamillo:
Thank you for your writing. I only remember a few times my daughter (who is now nine) was excited about reading, once in 1st grade her teacher read Because of Winn Dixie and she loved it and then in 3rd grade a student teacher read The Tales of Desperaux and she loved it. The Tale of Desperaux made such an impact on my daughter that the little girl who once would rather do anything but read now enjoys reading and looks forward to each new book from you. I bought Great Joy yesterday and surprised her with it and she almost cried she was so excited. Her excitement about your books is contagious and almost tangible.
Thank you for your writing, it has inspired my daughter and awaken something new in her. She is now in 4th grade where they are focusing a lot on writing and she loves it and wants to be an author like you.
    Thank you again.

I am a 5th grade teacher. I hold such a deep love for all of your books. When my students were struggling with truly seeing the joy reading gives and the possibilities it brings into life, I read them the Tale of Despereaux and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, my personal favorites. It was amazing watching before my eyes students that come from all walks of life, some of them extremely hard walks of life, light up with excitement at the thought of hearing just one more chapter. They became obssessed with your books and for Christmas I had parents calling left and right asking where they can find them. The kids actually asked for books for Christmas!!!! Your writing sparked something in them that they never knew existed, a true and sincere love of reading, which now a days seems like a Miracle! Thank you and please keep writing your wonderful stories! The kids would love to be able to send you letters and their thoughts about their reading. Is there any way they can do this?
    Thank you!!!
