Shadow & Bone–The Movie

Shadow & Bone, the amazing debut novel by Leigh Bardugo, has been optioned by DreamWorks Studio.  David Heyman, Harry Potter producer, will produce along with Jeffery Clifford.

“We found not just a fantastic story, but one set in a mystical and fascinating world that will translate well to the big screen,” said DreamWorks production president Holly Bario. “We are excited to begin adapting this book and look forward to working with David Heyman who has unparalleled proven success in this genre.”

Heyman called Shadow and Bone “a riveting and wholly original adventure set in a breathtakingly imaginative world.”

Fancy Nancy–The Movie

EarlyWord has the news that there will be a Fancy Nancy film coming from Fox.

So far, there are only talks about producers, discussions which include Tina Fey and Shawn Levy.  Levy directed the two Night at the Museum films, so he has experience with family movies.

Selena Gomez Stars in a Book Near You

Selena Gomez, Disney star of Wizards of Waverly Place and Beezus from Ramona and Beezus, the movie, has optioned the film rights for The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson.  Gomez is taking her career into her own hands, creating a production company.

She is also slated to star in Universal’s Thirteen Reasons Why, based on the book by Jay Asher.

While I worry about a Disney-fication of these books, I am also very intrigued by this trend of riding popular teen fiction to stardom.  I suppose we will have to wait and see if a darker, more mature Gomez results.

Daughter of Smoke & Bone–The Movie

Entertainment Weekly’s Shelf Life has the news that the film rights for Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor have been acquired by Universal Pictures.

Huge congratulations to Laini!  Here is her response in EW:

“My goal is always to write stories that readers will want to climb inside of and live in, and which – I hope – will allow them to just lose themselves in the page,” said Taylor in reaction to the acquisition. “It is a hugely thrilling prospect to think about Universal and filmmakers translating my world onscreen and giving it a second life in such a grand way.  I’m over the moon.”

And I will look forward to the second book in the series coming out in September, 2012.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children–The Movie

Deadline has the news that Jane Goldman, screenwriter of X-Men: First Class, is in talks to adapt Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.  I love the idea of Tim Burton directing, because I think he has the perfect eye for the mix of timelessness and magical intrigue from the book.  He will also embrace the unsettling feeling of the book and really bring that through too.

Graveyard Book–The Movie

The LA Times has a juicy article about Neil Gaiman and the 15th anniversary collection of Neverwhere for American audiences.  Hidden in there is a tidbit that teases about the Graveyard Book the movie:

“I don’t know if I’m allowed to say much because huge, cool, strange, interesting things have been happening in the background with ‘The Graveyard Book’ movie, but I do not believe I’m allowed to tell you any of them until official announcements, actual press releases, come out …. Suffice to say, interesting things are happening,” Gaiman said.

I am so glad that things are looking up after the last Graveyard Book film plans fell apart.  The book is so cinematic that it plays like a film in your head already.  It’s one of those books that begs to be a great film.

Twilight Targeted by Hackers

According to Mashable, Twilight fans are being targeted by hackers who are looking to infect your computer with malware.  They are targeting Twilight-related searches by adding in links that will infect your computer.

Some of the search terms are:

  • Nude pictures of Taylor Lautner
  • Robert and Kristin kissing
  • Twilight true love

This isn’t the first time Twilight fans have been targeted by hackers.  But as the release date nears, Twilight fans should definitely be aware of the dangerous bite of malware.
